New Year's decorations are arranged to welcome and honor the Toshi-gami (New Year's deity) of the year. In general households, decorating begins around December 27th (the 29th is considered unlucky as it sounds like waiting for hardship, and the 31st is considered one-night decoration, so decorating on these days is said to be inauspicious).
