Showa Retro!! Ainu People Nipopo Doll 2-Doll Set
11.00 $
Description
This is a Nipopo Doll, a wooden carving by the Ainu people.
Nipopo means small wooden child in the Ainu language, and they have been cherished as amulets to ward off evil and bring good fortune.
It is said that the Karafuto Ainu people, in particular, made them by carving branches and trunks of trees.
Nipopo Dolls are often made as a pair of husband and wife, symbolizing marital harmony and prosperity of descendants.
The dolls in the image are also thought to represent a couple, as they are placed close together, one male and one female. Some are also hand-carved by inmates at Abashiri Prison as a wish for rehabilitation, and they are famous as souvenirs from Hokkaido.
Nipopo Dolls are loved by many for their simple expressions and warm wooden carvings.
Please refrain from purchasing if you are concerned about them being kept in a private home.
